Branding is part of “1. Decide,” and its execution lives in “2. Sell.”
Branding = part of Decide (Strategy)
This is the core definition layer:
- Positioning (why you exist, for whom)
- Category choice (what game you’re playing)
- Value proposition
- Brand promise
- Tone, identity, perception you want to own
This is irreversible direction-setting. Owned by: CEO / Strategy / sometimes CMO at senior level If this is wrong, no amount of marketing fixes it.
Branding = part of Sell (Commercial). This is the activation layer:
- Campaigns
- Visual identity rollout
- Content, ads, website
- Lead generation
- Sales messaging
This is how the brand shows up to drive revenue. Owned by: Marketing / Growth / Sales. If this is weak, a strong brand won’t convert.
The sharp distinction
- Branding (Decide) = What do we want to be known for?
- Branding (Sell) = How do we make people believe it and buy
- If you’re defining positioning → Decide
- If you’re executing campaigns → Sell
- If one team owns both → you risk bias toward short-term revenue over long-term brand equity
Branding is strategic at its core (Decide) and commercial in its expression through marketing (Sell).
